Description
Julia Goolsby and Oubria Tronshaw re-vision the classic Rider Waite Smith with powerful images of people of colour.
The Rider Waite Smith Tarot deck, originally published in 1910, was illustrated by Pamela Colman-Smith. Though Colman-Smith she spent much of her early life living in Jamaica and though much of her illustrative work is focused on Jamaican life, she was comissioned to draw scenes depicting only whites for this tarot deck.
Oubria & Julia felt that it was time for the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck to be re-imagined, to reflect the images of the individuals Colman-Smith surely would have considered examples of classic, magical archetypes. Representation matters. Visual reparations matter. As new generations of melanated men and women turn toward tarot cards for guidance, spirituality and entrepreneurship, its imperative they use tools that replenish their self-esteem, power & potential.
The Melanated Classic Tarot includes 78 full color illustrations by Julia Goolsby. A brief instruction leaflet also contains a link to a detailed resource library of information about cards, planetary associations and much more, to help the reader connect more deeply with the deck.
