The Magician, intention, poise, manifestation

I came into my studio today, early, on a quiet Sunday morning. Silently free-wheeling along empty streets in bright bright sunshine. It’s going to be a beautiful day.

I wasn’t sure what I was doing here, I just knew I wanted to be in my little office sanctuary. I know I’m going to do something really special today… I just don’t know what it is yet.

For the first ten minutes I just sat at my desk, eyes closed. Breathing. The sunlight pours in through my window at this time of day and I could feel it on my hands.

Then I drew a card:

The Magician.

My favourite Magician, actually, from the Shadowscapes Tarot. It’s a card full of potential. Still, meditative, yet with this sensation that something incredible is just…about…to happen.

The Magician, from the Shadowscapes Tarot by Stephanie Piu-Mun Law

There is so much quietly going on in this card. It feels as though you’ve wandered through a mythical woodland and come into a clearing, happening upon this mysterious creature, lost in their moment of manifestation. Look at the poise – there is a lot of work going into that balanced pose, the outstretched wings counterbalancing the knees, everything supported on tip-toes, on a narrow rock. The whole image is infused with a powerful sense of intention.

From those wings hang the four elements

A lantern, representing fire, inspiration, passion, ideas. Shells for water, intuition, emotion, feeling. A feather, air, foresight, clarity, justice. And leaves for earth – physicality, strength, commitment.

Theses elements are the magician’s resources, always available. That’s a huge part of their power. This card is about manifesting what you want, when you want it. Deciding on an action and – BAM – making it happen. To do that, you need to be able to draw on each of those four elements. The Magician keeps them close -the four elements are the Magcian’s toolbox.

There’s another element here too: Magic

Yes, this card is about getting stuff done, and there’s magic in exercising your willpower, using the four elements and making things happen. But The Magician, as card number 1, the first step in the Fool’s journey, there’s something more going on.

Whether you believe in a higher power or not, The Magician is about channelling. Tapping into a source of energy that is bigger than ‘ just you’. The universe is huge, there is so much energy floating and flying around. You can use this energy to power your own projects.

This is about working with intent.

Intent is magic.

Intention is the most important part of any ritual or spell. Intention is the most important part or any project.

Intention is visualising what you wish to achieve – whether that’s a promotion in your job, world peace or a calmer, happier you it doesn’t matter. Intention is belief that you can do it.

Intention is asking the universe for help. An exchange of energy. Going beyond your apparent limitations. Deciding.

Intention is will. And will is magic. And that is The Magician.

Begin, now, with what you have.

A phrase I’ve been banging on about lately. This Magician doesn’t have much in the way of material resources. Yet they have everything they need. This is a perfect, poised moment, having gathered their personal resources – the four elements hanging from those wings – they now reach for the fifth. This is the moment of asking, the very moment of intention setting. You can already see the magic happening – that green ball or energy, levitating between their hands, the lemniscate glowing above their head. Something exciting is about to happen… because The Magician wills it so.

PS Here’s another post about The Magician, with a little gallery of woman-y versions to counteract all that ‘masculine principle’ nonsense :)

Wonderful post about how a magician works his magic. This card is one of my favorite Magicians too. As a matter of fact I love the whole deck :D

  2. I really love this version of The Magicians! This deck is at the top of my wish list right now.

This is a card I would do well to mediate on. I need to get back to setting intentions and reaching out for a source that is bigger than me.

    Love this one today :)

I love the Magician from this deck. There is something about him that is strangely alluring. I want to sit at his feet and learn all that he knows. This is good timing for me. So thank you.
