Crystal Portraits: a mineralogical folklore deck is a project of Katie Rose Pipkin (illustrations) and Olivia Pepper (text). It was borne out of a shared affection for crystals that grew out of many trips to rock shops, shared houses filled with mineral specimens, and growing crystal collections that have been bountifully augmented with gifts from one another over the years.
Deck Two contains some of the lesser-known crystals – unusual beauties such as bloodstone, rhodochrosite, copper and diamond.
The deck can be used informationally, like a book, or interpretationally, like an artwork. The backs of the cards detail common folkloric uses of stones, as well as hardness, composition, appropriate pairings, and interesting notes or anecdotes collected by Olivia Pepper.
The cards are square and come in a cardboard box, complete with a small booklet with further information.
I use this deck to learn about crystals – regularly drawing a card to finish up a reading or to provide a thoughtful message for the day. Katie’s illustrations are beautifully detailed, yet strikingly simple at the same time.
This deck includes:
Pyrite, Copper, Herkimer Diamond, Chrysoprase, Chiastolite, Howlite, Bloodstone, Lepidolite, Larimar, Chalcedony, Celestite, Rhodochrosite, Chrysocolla, Iolite, Azurite, Heulandite, Sodalite, Ametrine, Variscite, Aventurine, Jet, Rutilated Quartz, Galena, Kunzite.
